Getting your business organized

Organize Your Business with a Bullet Journal

Organize Your Business with a Bullet Journal

Posted on January 26, 2017
by Andrea J. Stenberg

If you’re like me the beginning of a new year is like a clean slate. It’s a time to set new goals, get organized and try new things.

I always start the year with the best of intentions but staying on track is always been my number one challenge. This year I came across a new tool, something that fits in with my style but added a few extra bells and whistles to make it more efficient. It’s called the Bullet Journal.

The Bullet Journal is a way to use a notebook to track your activities, make plans and help you be more organized in your business.

I’ve always used a notebook to brainstorm, make to-do lists, take notes when talking to clients and generally keep track of what I’m doing. When I remembered I wrote the date on the page. However, when I want to find something I have to try to remember approximately what date I wrote it down and then flip through pages trying to find it.

Not very efficient.

The Bullet Journal solves that problem. At the front you create an index and record important bits of information or documents that you want to refer back to and their page numbers. Of course this means you have to number the pages.

At www.BulletJournal.com you can buy a special notebook and get instructions on how to set it up. However I just use a regular spiral bound school notebook. Read More→

Time Management - control your to-do list

Time Management – Take Control of Your To Do List

Posted on August 15, 2014
by Andrea J. Stenberg

As entrepreneurs we always have more on our “to do” list than we have time for. That’s why I was so excited when Lisa Mallis agreed to come on a HOA and share her tips and strategies for managing your time. Lisa combines her experience as a teacher and direct sales with her love of schedules, systems and all things time management to create System Savvy Consulting.

I think her tip about delegation is one that I especially needed to hear. As I mention in the interview, I think most entrepreneurs are on some level control freaks. That’s why we started our own business – so we could be in control. Delegating tasks and letting go can be hard. I know it is for me.

Another reason delegation can be hard is many of us – particularly solopreneurs or those just starting out – feel that they can’t afford to hire help. I sure is one of my stumbling blocks. But Lisa has a great answer to this.

She pointed out that if you normally earn $100/hr why are you updating your website if you can hire a VA to do it for $30/hr? The VA will probably do it faster any way, then you can go out and engage in revenue-generating activities. Such a good point.

Do watch the video to hear all Lisa has to say about time management.

Have Cell Phone, Will Travel – Working Away From Your Home Office

Posted on May 30, 2013
by Andrea J. Stenberg

Like many people my age, I have aging parents who need a little help. Case in point, next week my mom is having knee replacement surgery.

If I have my cell phone, laptop and internet access I can work anywhereBoth she and dad were worrying about how they’d manage when she gets out of the hospital. At one point she was almost in a panic. “Don’t worry,” I said. “If you need it I’ll just move in until you’re on your feet.”

They worried about me taking so much time off work but I reassured them. If I have my cell phone, laptop and internet access I can work from a coffee shop. Literally.

I once landed a new client, networked with a former client and created a marketing plan all while having a coffee and donut at Tim Horton’s. Setting up shop at their place is a piece of cake.

Yes, I’m having to do a little bit of juggling. For the first week or so after she gets out of the hospital I’m not booking any appointments and I’ve warned clients I may not be able to get back to them as quickly as usual.

But otherwise, I expect to be able to get a fair amount of work done. And since they live seven blocks from my house, if I’ve forgotten anything I can always run back home easily.

Being able to care for my mother and still run my business has given be a great deal of peace of mind. I could make the offer without having to ask permission or take time off work.

If I were working for someone else it wouldn’t be as simple. This is just one of the many reasons I’m so glad I had the courage to go out on my own eight years ago.

How has running a business given you the flexibility to do the things you need to do in your personal life? Please leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Getting Organized: Dealing With Interruptions

Posted on March 14, 2013
by Andrea J. Stenberg

This is a video by productivity guru David Allen. Allen is author of the best-selling author of Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity. This book is a classic and has a treasured place on my bookshelf.

These days however, I often find it easier to consume non-fiction via audio or video. Therefore, today I’m sharing Allen’s video about Dealing with Interruptions. He gives some simple tips for dealing with phone calls, people dropping in and how to juggle what you were working on with the new “to-do” items the interrupter gave you.

I hope you enjoy the video.

Work and Life Balance – Is being fit compatible with running a business?

Work and Life Balance – Is being fit compatible with running a business?

Like many middle aged women who spend too much time sitting in front of the computer rather than being out in the world, the size of my behind (not to mention the rest of me) has managed to become larger.

Work and Life Balance – Is being fit compatible with running a business? While I knew that I needed to lose the weight I made a decision that I needed to grow my business before I could worry about shrinking my butt. It just seemed like I only had so much mental energy to spend and I wanted to spend it all on building my business.

Then about six weeks ago my mom decided she needed to get in shape and joined the Y. Wanting to support her, I started attending with her. I had no particular goals, I just worked out when she did.

Now since I’m not retired I’m not spending two hours a day six days a week at the Y like my mom is. However, an interesting thing has happened in the last six weeks. I’ve gone from nearly drowning while swimming 12 lengths, to whipping through 40 lengths in no time flat. My favorite dress pants now fit me again, and even a little loose.

But the exciting and surprising thing is the effect on my business. Although I’m taking a couple of hours in the middle of the day two or three times a week, I’m getting way more done. I’m more focused, more excited about my business and have more energy throughout the day.

Who knew?

Okay, probably lots of people knew but apparently I didn’t.

So the moral of the story is I just needed to get moving. Setting goals for losing weight or getting in shape seems overwhelming, but hitting the pool and the gym with my mom is easy.

This is a mistake I won’t make again. I feel too good and my business is thriving.
